Singled Out: The Most Popular Dating Show on TV

Back in the 90s, dating shows have become popular as many men and women tried to push their luck in finding the love of their lives through this style of dating. Of course, reality dating shows during that time could already be considered as the modern way of dating. One dating TV show that made an unforgettable mark among viewers is MTV’s SingledOut, which lasted on air from 1995 to 1998.

Hosted by Chris Hardwick and Jenny McCarthy – who was later on replaced by Carmen Electra – the show SingledOut featured 50 single women and 50 single men. They were to compete against each other to get the approval of the “picker.” The picker is the main contestant and he or she is the one who will pick the person to go out on a date with.
Before a date is chosen, the picker and the single contestants must go through various elimination rounds. The first is the “categories round” wherein the picker is presented with six categories that change per episode. These categories range from physical appearance up to personal beliefs and other preferences. In each category there are a list of choices. For example, if the category is “hair” the choices might be “brunette,” “blonde,” or “red.” The picker will pick one and those under the picked category will be eliminated. This process goes on until some five to eight contestants are left.

The next round is the “keep ‘em or dump ‘em” where the picker will ask questions or give a situation. Based on how the contestant answers to it, the picker will either keep ‘em or dump ‘em. In the last round, the contestants who were kept will stand at the end of a walkway while the picker is on the other end. Questions will be asked and the person who answers the same as the picker will back step to advance closer to the picker. Whoever reaches him or her first wins the game.
The last part of the game SingledOut is the revelation of the picker’s choice. The winner and the picker will stand back-to-back until the hosts asks them to turn. After which, the winners will be told of their prizes. More Singled Out info may be searched and found online.
